Please Donate to Landcare Australia’s Victorian Bushfire Recovery Appeal

Author: Ellen Gray

In response to the devastating Victorian bushfires, Landcare Australia has set up a new Recovery Fund to support the work of landcare groups in affected areas, and is appealing for donations.

Funds raised through this initiative will be available for volunteer landcare groups in the future, when they feel ready to begin dealing with the environmental impacts of the bushfire. Landcare Australia CEO, Brian Scarsbrick, said:

The loss of life resulting from the Victorian bushfires is an unspeakable tragedy, and on behalf of Landcare Australia I offer my deepest sympathy to the family, friends and community of those affected. The bushfires have wiped out huge areas of native vegetation and farming land, and the impact on native wildlife and biodiversity has been devastating. With this Recovery Appeal, we will work with communities at a grassroots level to repair the environmental damage.

Landcare groups are some of the most hard-working and passionate volunteers in Australia. They give countless hours to on-ground environmental projects that combat issues like soil erosion, salinity, loss of biodiversity and vegetation and poor water quality. Whilst vital for the environment, these works will also be essential in rebuilding towns, ensuring access to clean water, local food production and other industries.

The recent Victorian bushfires have wiped out a huge area of native vegetation and farming land, destroying both long-term and recent work of landcare volunteers. Projects that have taken thousands of dollars and years of volunteer labour are gone, as are fledgling projects that were just getting off the ground. New landcare projects will also be essential to give surviving patches of our unique wilderness the best chance of recovery.

When the time comes, Landcare Australia will work together with affected communities to begin the environmental recovery. Monies raised may go towards re-fencing to allow natural regeneration; erosion control; replacing lost tools and equipment; re-establishing native vegetation; providing temporary habitat for native animals; holding community events or other priority activities.

Landcare Australia is appealing to our corporate partners, corporate Australia in general and the wider community to donate to the Recovery Fund and help the Victorian landcare communities get back on their feet.
