“During the 80s and 90s, the Department of Conservation and Land Management was investigating the use of mallees as the basis for developing a eucalyptus oil industry. The mallees needed to be integrated into production systems. Don and Ian were actually amongst the first farmers to get involved.”
“This triggered Ian’s passion for mallees. He started integrating trees into farm landscapes with an on-going farming plan – created with the Kalannie-Goodlands Landcare District. Trees were used to control surface water movement, prevent wind erosion and reduce rising water tables.”
“In a decade Ian established more than a million trees on the property. This is extraordinary stuff. The Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry, Peter McGauran, said the Australian Government is proud to be involved with the National Landcare Awards. “These awards showcase the achievements of people who are making a vital contribution to the sustainable management of our natural resources through community group and industry volunteer effort.”
Brian Scarsbrick added, “Landcare is making such a difference. Thousands of Aussies are out there tackling the problems. We have serious issues but the wonderful thing is many Australians are serious about tackling those problems. We congratulate all the National Landcare Awards’ winners.”
“Ultimately everybody is a winner with these awards. We’ve seen amazing finalists and our key message is well done to every single finalist because you are doing landcare and
