Winner: Yadgalah Aboriginal Corporation Inc., Western Australia
In 1999, the Yadgalah Aboriginal Corporation Inc undertook a project to track the movements and habitat usage of the Dugong through an extensive tagging program within the Shark Bay World Heritage Property along Western Australia’s Pilbara coastline.
The results achieved have been groundbreaking and represent the first ever documentation of the seasonal movement of Dugong in Shark Bay.

The Saltshaker Project is an important revegetation scheme in the Boorowa Shire of southern NSW where dryland salinity and reduced water quality have become major issues for the local community. The Boorowa River catchment drains part of the south-west slopes of NSW, the most heavily cleared bio-region in the state.

The Coorong District Council was one of the first in Australia to show the foresight to fully incorporate the environment into its strategic and development planning.
The Coorong is an environmentally sensitive and internationally recognised (Ramsar listed) wetland area located at the mouth of Australia’s largest river, the Murray. It is the largest council area in South Australia covering 48,800 hectares (ha).

The Mary River is a large catchment flowing between Maleny and Fraser Island in South East Queensland. The Mary River and Tributaries Rehabilitation Plan was the first catchment-wide rehabilitation plan for Queensland, adopted in 1999. The plan focussed on rejuvenating large tracts of native vegetation and protecting the little habitat that remained. In just five years, there have been over 300 projects to restore riverbanks

Roger Nield and his family were among the first landholders in Australia to be actively involved in landcare. Since the 1970’s, Roger has been implementing landcare farming techniques on his 2840 hectare (ha) property in the Cleve District on South Australia’s Eyre Peninsula, an area susceptible to water erosion, soil acidity, salinity and sodicity.
